Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson

.

The world lost a great light and hugely influential musician with the passing of Peter Christopherson last month, and with myself (Lau) being a huge fan of all of his projects, I decided I would post my little mix dedicated to him here. If you are also a fan, please take a moment to go to the Threshold House website and make a donation in his memory to help children affected by AIDs in Thailand.

Rest easy, Sleazy.

Season of The Witch Release Party

Thank you to everyone that came out to Rio Rita last night to celebrate the release of our first mix CD, Season of The Witch. We hope that everyone that got a copy enjoys it, and if you feel a spirit possessing you while listening – it’s best to just accept it.

We set up an altar to incant all that we could, and offered our sounds up to the gods. Pictures below.

A few more on our flickr.

Season of The Witch

Our first mix CD in a series of themed mixes we are doing is now available here. It was a serious labour of love and effort and we are so excited to have the final product in our hot little hands. Thank you so much to Ben Webster, Affordable Sound, Dave and Snowman, Scott Cannon, and everyone else that helped make it possible.

More info is here. And for those of you who are local, the info for the release party is here.

Santisima Muerte

Dia de los Muertos is one of our favorite holidays, and for the second year in a row, we’ve carved a pumpkin depicting some skellington friends. This year we decided on making a skeleton lady (last year was the Duke), as inspired by a mural put up on 5th street downtown for the Dia de los Muertos festivites a few days ago. Sadly, I didn’t have our camera on hand, but the lovely Angeliska got a couple of beautiful shots:

(Another view)

These beautiful ladies made me want to make one of my own, and below are the results. A little rough, but this is only my second (!) pumpkin carving ever – with the help of Dave of course. We also found this wonderful Santisimia Muerta (The Holy Dead) candle that seemed all too fitting for the festivities. You can view the whole set on flickr here.

Zorch and their House Party

Zorch is a recently transplanted two-piece band that has quickly shot up to the top of Recspec’s favourites – their sound is a mix of freak out rock, psychdeleic electronic arpeggios, tribal music to be circumsized by, and the fruits of two very talented musicians. We work with them for their design and video projections and are very glad that they are in Austin now. You can download their album at their website (designed by Recspec!), or listen now over at their myspace.

Recently they had a house party with some other Recspec favorites: Woodgrain, Butcher Bear, and FM Campers. Here are some pictures that we took on the night. Thanks for having us, Zorch!

A Joy Division Cover Band

Had the pleasure of seeing the Joy Division Cover Band at the Chain Drive on Wednesday – who are now one of my favourite bands in Austin.

A handful of photos from the show can be seen here.

Podcast Love

Some friends of ours have some really great podcasts that are currently live, so I thought I would link them here.

  1. Kon Karne and The Bear is our very own Kon Karne (Dave) and our friend Butcher Bear doing a podcast preview of their monthly night held at Rio Rita here in Austin. RECSPEC is also doing the design for the series – you can view the poster for the first night here.
  2. Rapid Composure Series 2009 is the new podcast from SLC based Eucci, and features near daily snippets of ambient noise and music for as-yet-unmade films. Really haunting and beautiful.
  3. 6th Floor Sessions is our good friend Zombie-J from San Francisco, dropping all sorts of bass-heavy dubstep-ish goodness.
  4. Scrapecast is the podcast of Austin-based Aphid and his other alter egos. Nice crunchy in your face electronic experimental madness.
  5. The 4am is writer Warren Ellis‘ collection of new found music sent to him directly by musicians and artists. If you have stuff to send him, you should. From his own words, The 4am “shits fireworks and baby heads.” Hell yes.

I’m sure I’m forgetting some of you, so e-mail us if you want your name included on this list. We’re music obsessed and love to spread your love.

Ume – Sunshower EP

Recently we finished the artwork and design for Ume‘s new EP, Sunshower – working directly with the band from the very start to develop the conceptualization of the artwork through to the end product.

We also designs the t-shirt for the release, inspired by old samurai movies and printed by I Heart U Productions. You can view a detail shot of the final product here:

The EP release was this past Saturday at Mohawk where we also did video projections for their show, and was absolutely packed. Thanks to everyone that came out. Be sure to check out Ume’s music on their myspace.

RECSPEC is an Austin, Texas based art and design studio founded by Laurel Barickman and David Milner. Besides design, we also specialize in video projections and production, show promotion, and DJing.
