Disaster Whirled

This past Sunday was the Fall seasonal KSE show, Melting into The Movement with ST 37, Unmoor, R. Lee Dockery and Bill Shute, Smokey Emery and Book of Shadows. It was an amazing evening of experimental and psychedelic music, that we were so pleased that we could be a part of. We did projections throughout the night for all of the acts, ranging from scenes from Judex to classic psychedelic oil footage.

Doing projections for experimental and abstract nights like this is always a treat because we can use strange and odd footage that wouldn’t work for anything else. Some photos from the night are below (more can be seen here):

Thanks so much to Bill Shute, all of the performers, ND, and Kendra Steiner Editions for such a wonderful event.

Melting Into The Movement

We’re super pleased to announce our next collaborative event with Kendra Steiner Editions: MELTING INTO THE MOVEMENT - KSE Fall 2011 Psychedelic Disaster Whirl, coming up on Sunday, October 16th.

Bill Shute runs and operates Kendra Steiner Editions out of San Antonio, and releases a wide array of wonderful poetry chapbooks and original CDRs from artists both local and on the other side of the world. We were asked to do projections for his last KSE event in Austin held at the Salvage Vangaurd Theatre and celebrating the 5th anniversary of the label, and we’ve worked with Bill to put together this upcoming fall show with our friends at the ND.

Hope to see you local Austin people there! Here’s a video from the last KSE show, with us doing projections for our good friend R. Lee Dockery. Can’t wait for the next one!

Introducing Tamale Molly!

We’ve been awfully silent lately, but there’s a reason for that — we’ve undertaken one of our biggest projects yet — the opening of a restaurant! We’ve teamed up with our good friends at ND Austin (whom we have designed logos, websites, and other goodness for) to create Tamale Molly, a new eatery that will be serving food into the new smaller bar attached to ND, The North Door!

Here’s a poster we’ve created for our big Grand Opening party happening on Wednesday August 31st, so if you’re in the Austin area, please do come by! It’ll be free, have lots of surprises, and really really fun.

Naturally, we are also designing all of the collateral for our brand, opting for a vintage Mexican pin-up feel, but also bringing in the bright CMYK colours to balance the black and white out. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates, and check out our menu on our website:Tamalemollyatx.com!

We’ll be posting a breakdown of all of the design elements for the brand soon, so keep an eye out and stay tuned.

The Recspec Sounds of Summer Series

Summer is here! And we’re working on a ton of great projects and new endeavors, but we’ve manage to fit in a couple of fun DJ nights next month between the craziness. We’d love to see you there!

The first is on Monday July 11th, where we’re playing with a few friends and co-horts for a sort of free-form DJ night at Beauty Bar. Come by and check out whatever music tickles our fancies, have a drink, and just hang out (facebook event). The lovely miss Honeybee is coming all the way from Houston to play with us as well — check out her awesome music site at Sucks My Brain Radio.

Then, on Saturday July 16th at The Volstead, we’ll be playing the best of the darker side of soul, funk, and country. Dark 50′s and 60′s pop, doo-wop, and other b-side gems. Music for gunmen and harlots (facebook event). We’re hoping to make this a semi-regular night, so please come out if you’re in the Austin area and journey to the Badlands with us.

The Burning Hellfire of the Texas Sun

Tonight is our monthly night at Rio Rita and our very own Mr. Kon Karne put together a hot little podcast as a preview for the night. Apologies for the radio silence on ye’ old blog – there are many new Recspec ventures and projects afoot that are currently in completion and thus taking up 99% of our time. We can’t wait to tell you about them! But until then, here are some steamy + sweltering jams.

Have we mentioned that its hot as hell in Texas? Literally. Like the surface of the sun.

Recspec goes Queerbombing!

Next Friday, June 3rd, is a pride event of epic proportions, and Recspec is happy and proud to be a part of it. Queerbomb! What is Queerbomb, you ask?

Queerbomb is a family of LGBTQIA individuals gathering to support our unique and collective pride. Our purpose is to provide a space to celebrate each and every member of our community and encourage all to embrace the manifold ways we contribute to building a beautiful and diverse society. We reclaim the radical, carnal and transgressive lineage of our ever-changing community in our ongoing fight for equal justice and the right to express ourselves in whatever way we see fit. (More here…)

Queerbomb exists as an organization of freaks, fancies, and all-around-fabulous people in Austin that have taken Pride back — with a rally, procession, and weekend of events — all non-commercial, judgement free and free to all. Embracing diversity and encouraging individuality, its a truly inspiring organization that has taken Austin and the queer scene by storm, and is certainly not going to leave anytime soon.

Recspec has had the pleasure of being asked to provide the visual projections for the after parties, so be sure to stop by and party with us after the procession leaves its glittery gorgeous mark all over Downtown Austin!

THE RALLY: 7:00 PM at the East Side Drive In, 1000 East Sixth Street.

THE PROCESSION: Will leave the East Side Drive In at 9:00, marching with our Queer Pride down Sixth Street, the straightest strip in town, before turning on Congress and returning to the Drive In via Seventh.

THE PARTIES: After the procession, follow the parade to an undisclosed location to keep the party going, where we’ll be doing projections for the rest of the night.

QueerBomb does not apologize. QueerBomb does not make excuses. QueerBomb is free for all. QueerBomb stands proud, and so should you.

Insect Records takes Fusebox

This past Thursday, with our buddies Insect Records we took over the Fusebox Festival at ND for a night, doing projections for a wide array of awesome musicians and acts. Mr. Butcher Bear took a couple photos of our projections on the night, and since we rarely get pictures of them, we thought we would share them here. Thanks for having us, Insect Records, Fusebox and ND!

A Two Year Launch

Last night was a double celebration, both for the 2 year anniversary of Kon Karne’s Butcher Shop with The Bear – a monthly DJ night that we put on with Insect Records – and for the launch of our new website. Insect Records have long been a part of the Recspec family, we designed their website, make their posters, work on album covers for them, and generally love everything that they do. We also love the Rio Rita, which has become our little home every month, offering the best damned bloody mary’s in the universe, and wonderful friends + fun.

We were also lucky enough to have our friend Katy, aka Katy Cupcake, make 100 cupcakes for us for the night, which only heightened our excitement with sugar and love. Thank you, Katy, they were delicious.

As a present to Insect Records founder and mastermind, Ben Webster, we also constructed and made a custom wheatpaste for the night: a huge cake with a big 2 candle and decoration of steaks (Kon Karne) and bears (Butcher Bear), which will now reside at Insect Records HQ. Happy birthday, Kon Karne, Butcher Bear, and Rio Rita! We love you! The spacemen represent our website launch, which is now sent off into the stratosphere at the speed of light. Zoooom.

Photographic evidence, more of which can be seen here.

Two Years of Kon Karne & The Bear and a New Website!

Our monthly night with Insect Records, Kon Karne’s Butcher Shop with The Bear, is turning 2 this month! We’ve taken the opportunity for celebration to also launch our new website, which has been bubbling on the back burner for the last month or so, and is just about ready to be released upon the masses. If you’d like to celebrate with us, please join us next Friday at Rio Rita… poster + details below.

Did we mention that there will be cupcakes?

Also be sure to listen to the newest podcast made for the occasion  (by clicking here) mixed by both Butcher Bear and DJ Kon Karne. Its a real treat, and one of the best ones yet.

So if you’re local to Austin, we hope to see you next Friday, and if not, keep an eye out for the brand new Recspec.org launch! We’re can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to.

2nd Annual Recspec Soup Competition

Last night was our 2nd annual soup competition — this year with even more entries than last (12!) — all of which were incredibly delicious. It was a ton of fun and a huge success. Thank you to everyone who came out, and either made or ate soup, and enjoyed warm fires and yummy food and mulled wine with us.

And congrats to Leana, who has now won twice in a row and has quite a title to defend. She won with an amazing tomato bisque called “Risky Bisqueness”. Ha!

Some photos below. More can be seen at our flickr (including pictures from last year).
